This is the total number of memory upgrade slots (sockets) followed by their configuration. Banks are the way a system addresses memory. A bank must be completely filled with memory modules of the same size and type in order for the system to recognize and address the memory. i.e. :

If it is DDR2 or DDR3 with 4 DIMM slots, then it will be a dual channel configuration, in which there will be no performance difference between having two slots filled vs all four filled, if only two are filled, it is the matter of if the motherboard supports the RAM sticks and the correct slots to fit them into. I usually always instal 4 sticks of memory on my desktop rigs (unless the board has only 2 slots). Laptops usually have 2 slots. I decided to upgrade my Alien R4 desktop from 32 gig Ram to 64 gig, I couldnt get it to respond with my computer, so I put my old ram back in slots, I have 4 8 gig sticks, I went to boot computer now it only reads 16 gigs of Ram, 2 DIMM slots. If you wanted 64gb of ram in 4 ram slots and you went with Samsung B-Die IC's or non-Micron, you'd get 16gb modules with memory IC's on both sides of all 4 dimms which equals 8 ranks since each dimm is dual ranked (512-bits). This could overload your CPU's Memory Controller, limiting your OC to your CPU AND your Memory. It probably doesn't make any significant difference but I've always used slots 2 and 4.
