Although New Hampshire has several different plate types, a few of our more popular plate types are described below. Please view our complete list of Plate Types for more information.

Passenger Plate: These are the standard issue plates with the 'old man of the mountain' design.

Decal Plate: These plates are available in both Passenger and Veteran and cost $15, in addition to the plate manufacturing fee, and regular town and state registration fees. The $8.00 plate manufacturing fee is only required in the first year of purchase. Decal Vanity Plates are also available for the additional $40 vanity plate fee. These plates allow for a 3' x 3' authorized decal to be placed on the plate. The legislature approves which organizations are allowed to sell decals to be placed on these plates. Please see our Decal Plate page for more detailed information and for a list of authorized organizations.

Vanity Plate: Vanity Plate means a personalized registration plate composed entirely of alpha characters, alpha numerical characters or a combination of symbols and alpha numerical characters, which can be obtained for an additional fee. Cost for the Vanity Plate is $40.00 for a twelve (12) month period and is prorated depending on the number of months you are registering your vehicle. To apply for a Vanity Plate, please fill out form Application for Vanity Plates(RDMV 120). To check the availability of a plate, please go to our Plate Search.

Veteran Plate: Veteran plates shall be issued to a motor vehicle registered pursuant to RSA 261:87-b.

Conservation (Moose Plate): Regular New Hampshire license plate with Moose logo on the left side. Cost for this plate is $30 per year in addition to the plate fee and regular town and state registration fees. An $8.00 plate fee is only valid in the first year of purchase. Proration is not available for the Moose Plate. Also available in Vanity Plates.

State Parks Plate: Regular New Hampshire license plate with Parks logo on the left side. This parks plate allows admission into most New Hampshire state parks. You can change your Standard Issue Plate to a Moose Plate when you re-register your vehicle. Just go to your municipal office as you normally do to register or reregister your car and fill out the “Application for Vanity Plates” form. This form will provide you with the option to buy a new Moose Plate as a Vanity Plate. You will be able to put down several combinations for the Vanity Plate you want and the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles will search its database to see if any of those combinations already exist on a currently registered New Hampshire license plate. If your Vanity Plate combination is available, you will receive a new Vanity Moose Plate within 2-3 weeks. You may receive a temporary paper license plate in the meantime.

All Vanity Moose Plates are charged both the $30 Moose Plate fee and the $40 Vanity Plate fee each year. That means that a Vanity Moose Plate will cost you $70 a year. (When you first purchase the plate you will also be charged the standard $8 reflectorized license plate fee, for a total of $78.) This is in addition to the annual vehicle registration fee set by your town or city (this fee varies and is based on your vehicle’s weight and the number of months for which you are registering the vehicle), and the standard state registration fee. Please note that the fees for a Vanity Plate are now prorated. Please see the chart below for the monthly Vanity Plate fee.
